Chapter 9 - Life Lessons from a Cat

As soon as Xander’s lips touch mine, I panic.

No, this can’t be happening. I’m an egg. A good egg. A loyal egg. Only rotten eggs mix business with pleasure.

Focus on work, I tell myself. Think about project plans and spreadsheets. Anything to take your mind off Xander’s lips.

I try to picture the latest customer satisfaction survey results in my head. Seventy-eight percent of our guests said that they prefer mild taco sauce, fourteen percent like hot sauce, and only eight percent think tacos should be sauce-free. I wonder if any of them would think a gyros was an acceptable substitute for a taco.

Okay, that didn’t help. Thinking about Greek food reminds me that there’s a Greek guy kissing me. Xander is utterly distracting. Would it really be that bad if I mixed business with pleasure?

And believe me, there’s a lot of pleasure going on here. Xander’s lips are soft and rough at the same time. How can something be both soft and rough? No idea, but the sensation is amazing. He trails kisses down my neck while twining his fingers in my hair. Then his hands run down my back. He draws me closer to him and murmurs something in Greek.

My heart races. I can’t understand what he’s saying, but that doesn’t matter. The meaning is clear—he wants me. From the way my body reacts to his, he knows that I want him too.

Xander suddenly pulls back and looks at me intently. He starts to say something, but I silence him with my lips. I start off with light, teasing kisses, then ratchet up the intensity until he moans softly.

He takes charge again, pressing me against a tree. When he nips my earlobe, it sends me over the edge. Then the panic bubbles up again and I push him away.

“We can’t do this, Xander.” I pace back and forth, quietly muttering the lyrics to the Humpty Dumpty company song over and over like a mantra. Scrambled eggs, fried eggs, eggs any way you please. Poached eggs, hard boiled eggs, eggs any way you like them. We’re eggtastic, you’re eggtastic, let’s have a yolk good time.

It doesn’t have the calming influence I hoped for. Instead, it reminds me of my quandary—torn between my desire for Xander and wanting to keep my job.

The song keeps playing through my head. I press my fingers to my temples, trying to get it to stop. I slump on the ground and hug my knees to my chest. Xander sits next to me. Even though he’s careful not to touch me, the heat emanating from his body makes me react physically.

“I’m sorry,” he says. “I shouldn’t have kissed you.”

“Guess you didn’t notice that I kissed you back,” I say dryly.

“But I started it.”

“It was going to happen regardless of who initiated it,” I say. “It could have easily been me who started it.”

“You can make the first move this time,” he suggests playfully.

I twist my body so that I can look him in the eye.
